In 2007, the Fifteenth WMO Congress welcomed a proposal by Canada to establish the WMO Global Cryosphere Watch (GCW) as an IPY legacy. The proposal largely followed recommendations of the IGOS Cryosphere Theme. The GCW will provide an international mechanism for supporting all key cryospheric in situ and space-based observations. It will also include cryospheric monitoring, assessment, product development, prediction, and related research. It aims to provide authoritative, clear, understandable and useable information on the past, current and future state of the cryosphere for use by the media, public, and decision of policy makers. GCW will also directly benefit society at large. In tandem with its partners, WCRP will continue to support the development of the GCW concept and planning of its initial activities.
