CliC's Role in IPY

With more than 50,000 participants from around 60 countries, the International Polar Year 2007-2008 (IPY) was one of the biggest scientific environmental campaigns in the history of science. WCRP affiliated experts supported and participated in the early discussions on the concept of IPY and helped to focus IPY on achieving a few practical goals rather than being a mere collection of individual projects. Due to efforts of CliC and partners, the climate variability and change science was at the centre of the IPY agenda. The CliC Project led the overall coordination of WCRP input to IPY. The State and Fate of the Polar Cryosphere project managed by the CliC SSG was the IPY umbrella project for the cryosphere. All WCRP-affiliated projects proposed one or several activities for consideration by the IPY Joint Committee, and more than 20 such activities were approved as major research clusters.
