Future of CliC

Long-term interests of CliC will reflect the future priorities of WCRP and will likely be associated with:

  • Targeted multi-disciplinary sea-level variability and change research.
  • Emerging research of understudied cryospheric elements, such as ice shelves, with a focus on the climate change and variability.
  • Synthesising activity/assessment on cryospheric contribution to water and carbon balance.
  • Scientific support to cryospheric observations and generation of data products, the IGOS Cryosphere Theme, GCW, GCOS, and other relevant systems and initiatives.
  • Collaboration with space agencies on mission strategy, calibration and validation, and data/products applications for global change research.
  • Collaboration and interaction with developing countries on cryospheric issues, in particular for regions of significant ice and snow masses.
  • Modelling and prediction of all cryospheric elements, for a broad range of applications, especially climate prediction from months to centuries.
  • Jointly with other WCRP projects and partners, developing a science theme on Polar predictability and modes of variability in the changing climate.
  • Developing “CliC-certified” predictions of all cryospheric elements that are essential for regional and national decision making.
  • Encouraging and promoting additional regional activities (i.e., in South America) that will stimulate related research and provide strategic regional planning on cryospheric issues to carry the legacy of CliC for future decades.
  • Enhancing collaboration with IGBP, IHDP, and other groups to include cryospheric change in studies of societal impact and mitigation.
  • Efforts aimed at developing an ability to study the role of cryosphere in the possible abrupt climate changes.
  • Support of early career scientists through APECS and PYRN networks.
