Responsibilities

What we do...

CliC's mission is to stimulate, support, and coordinate leading-edge cryosphere research in order to foster a greater scientific understanding of the cryosphere and its role in the climate system.

To attain its goal, CliC develops and coordinates national and international activities related to cryosphere and climate. This includes organizing conferences, workshops, scientific experiments, and model comparison studies, as well as collaboration with other groups involved in climate research. CliC promotes projects to recover, archive, and distribute historic data sets.

CliC is not a funding agency, but assists with science development by providing scientific advice and also seed money. In general, CliC-supported activities are international and of global and of interest. The CliC instruments to support science development include:

  • Assessments/Science Planning Activities
  • Long-term programs, initiated under the umbrella of CliC
  • Workshops and conferences
  • Other instruments (i.e., projects, working groups, networks)
  • Support to early career scientists

Activities

CliC aimes to:

  • Initiate and organize conferences and workshops
  • Initiate and organize coordinated scientific experiments, such as cruises, process studies, model intercomparisons, etc
  • Coordinate proposals to funding agencies and logistic support providers
  • Promote projects to recover, archive, and distribute historic data sets
  • Promote free exchange of data relating to the cryosphere and its role in climate
  • Support a web-based data and information service
  • Publish newsletters, articles, and reports
