In this study, an added value assessment is presented of the regional climate model hindcast simulation for Siberia using COSMO-CLM (CCLM) with respect to snow water equivalent (SWE). Reconstructed SWE was obtained for the period of 1948-2010 at 50 km grid spacing driven by NCEP-R1 reanalysis. The aim is to investigate the ability of dynamical downscaling technique to provide more detail in the SWE climatology than given by the used forcing. The satellite-derived SWE estimate provided by ESA GlobSnow is used as reference for the years 1987-2010. In addition, the hindcast quality is assessed to further reanalyses. CCLM shows a clear added value compared to the SWE estimate of NCEP-R1 when GlobSnow is used as reference. SWE of CCLM is in good agreement with GlobSnow in January but generally overestimates SWE during April. Furthermore, reconstructed SWE fields of CCLM are more consistent in time than provided by ERA-Interim and NCEP-R2.
