Quantification of methane emissions from the Arctic permafrost on a regional scale is urgently needed in order to understand and predict the possible impacts on global warming. Methane release depends on a variety of land surface and meteorological states, which vary in space. Consequently, also methane release exhibits spatial variability, which cannot be captured with chamber or tower-based measurements alone. To overcome this spatial limitation and to cover various surfaces, we use airborne eddy-covariance measurements. In the summers of 2012 and 2013 low-level flights have been performed in Alaskan and Canadian permafrost regions to determine methane fluxes. A combination of mechanistic and data-driven analysis tools allows us to relate the measured methane fluxes to spatial-temporally resolved surface properties and basic meteorological information. The aim is to develop a predictive model that produces maps of methane emissions, based on the spatial variation of the land surface and meteorological states.
