Summary from the 2014 ISMASS Steering Committee Meeting

Description

The Ice Sheet Mass Balance and Sea Level (ISMASS) Expert Group Steering Committee (SC) met on August 25, 2014, during the SCAR Open Science Conference, in Auckland. During the meeting, the activities carried on since the last ISMASS SC were reviewed. It was emphasized that the ISMASS website was developed under the CliC website.

On May 19-20, 2015, a meeting will be organized on Constraining Uncertainty in Greenland Ice Sheet Surface Mass Balance Model Output an In Situ Validation, in Sheffield. WCRP/CliC is currently arranging and paying for accommodation for five participants, including an APECS representative, to attend the Sheffield meeting.

Three ISMASS activities will also be organized in parallel with the IGS International Symposium on Contemporary Ice-Sheet Dynamics: ocean interaction, meltwater and non-linear effects meeting in Cambridge, August 16-21, 2015:
-2015 ISMASS SC meeting
-MISMIP+ meeting
-Sponsorship of an ‘ISMASS Fellowship’, which will enable one Early Career Researcher (ECR) to attend the IGS meeting.

The ISMASS SC also decided to recruit an ECR to the SC who would be expected to sit on the committee for 2 to 3 years.

Participants: Catherine Ritz, Francisco Navarro, Frank Pattyn, Pippa Whitehouse, Rupert Gladstone (APECS), Gerlis Fugmann, Ryan Walker

The atmosphere-ocean boundary layer in which sea ice resides includes many complex processes that require a more realistic treatment in GCMs, particularly as models move toward full earth system descriptions. The primary purpose of the workshop was to define and discuss such coupled processes...
