Frostbyte by Barbara Stenni, for the Large Scale Climate Variability in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean workshop, held from 24 - 26th March 2015, at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego, USA.

 

A polar ice sheet can be considered an archive of the precipitation of the past and Antarctica offers a unique opportunity to fill the spatial and temporal gap existing in meteorological observations by interpreting the isotopic profiles obtained from the ice cores to reconstruct the climate of the past at different temporal scales from decades to glacial-interglacial cycles.
