A Radosteva: Geocryoloigal monitoring of Sytykan waterworks with high-resolution satellite imagery

This presentation was held at the DUE Permafrost 2014 workshop, 12th of Febuary 2014, Frascati, Italy

Radosteva, Anastasia
Lomonosov Moscow State University, Moscow Russia

Waterworks are big critically important water management complexes; they consist of many objects. Objects provide loads which differ in temperature, square and duration; loads trigger cryogenic processes and major changes in geosystems. Waterworks become crazy quilt. The only instrument for monitoring the whole quilt – is satellite imagery: it provide big square, high spatial and temporal resolution, reasonable price. I applied a satellite image to model the seasonally thaw layer change in Sytykan waterworks area (Western Yakutia). Analysis of SPOT-5 image, archived materials about climate and weather, geology, geocryology, geomorphology and flora of the area resulted in a landscape classification. Stephan-Feldman method was used to calculate seasonally thaw layer thickness and temperature for each landscape type. The results coincide with measurements. Temporal and spectral analysis of imagery and field inspection can enrich the model and improve the precision of calculations.

The atmosphere-ocean boundary layer in which sea ice resides includes many complex processes that require a more realistic treatment in GCMs, particularly as models move toward full earth system descriptions. The primary purpose of the workshop was to define and discuss such coupled processes...
