A M Trofaier: The distribution of water bodies on the Yamal peninsula

This presentation was held at the DUE Permafrost 2014 workshop, 12th of Febuary 2014, Frascati, Italy

Arctic and sub-Arctic freshwater ecosystems contribute significantly to biogeochemical cycles. The need to upscale carbon emissions from these inland waters emphasises the importance of studying lake number and size distributions, and of establishing an inventory of their abundance across these permafrost landscapes. The present study analyses size-frequency distributions of lakes on the Yamal peninsula using active microwave data from both TerraSAR-X and Envisat ASAR WS sensors. This is a comparison study of SAR data of varying spatial resolution. The benefits of using ASAR WS data lie with its high temporal acquisition frequencies. These data allow a dynamic approach to water body monitoring, enabling size-frequency distributions to be established for the early, mid and late summer season. The objective of the present study is to investigate the applicability of using ASAR WS data as a means for creating a dynamic water body inventory.

The atmosphere-ocean boundary layer in which sea ice resides includes many complex processes that require a more realistic treatment in GCMs, particularly as models move toward full earth system descriptions. The primary purpose of the workshop was to define and discuss such coupled processes...
