Cryosphere Linkages 2014 Report

In early 2014, CliC provided sponsorship towards a major event in the Southern Hemisphere, namely the International Glaciological Society (IGS) International Sea Ice Symposium. The conference provided a venue for the CliC sponsored Arctic Sea Ice Working Group and Antarctic Sea Ice Processes and Climate (ASPeCt) joint meeting (see for more details) as well as a CliC-sponsored special session on cross-cryosphere interactions and an associated Workshop on “Understanding linkages between different elements of the high-latitude cryosphere – How important are they?” This report is a summary of the conference as well as the ‘linkages’ activities that were convened by Dr Rob Massom (Australian Antarctic Division and Antarctic Climate & Ecosystems CRC), who was also co-chair of the overall conference (along with Dr Petra Heil, also AAD and ACE CRC). The linkages workshop and associated session provided an important means of introducing the new Interactions Between Cryospheric Elements CliC Targeted Activity to the international community with an interest in sea ice, and gauging community interest.

The atmosphere-ocean boundary layer in which sea ice resides includes many complex processes that require a more realistic treatment in GCMs, particularly as models move toward full earth system descriptions. The primary purpose of the workshop was to define and discuss such coupled processes...
